Wire with a smaller gauge number uses more steel in its manufacture and is generally stronger. For most everyday uses, a gauge between 11 and 9 is considered to be adequate; for more specialized industrial uses, gauge six is typically used.
Perhaps the biggest advantage of chain fencing is its versatility; it is often the fence of choice for areas that need to be kept secure, both residential and industrial. Whereas a chain link fence is fairly secure and durable, it doesn't really provide any privacy; if this is your main reason for installing a fence, you would be better off with another material, such as wood or vinyl. It has to be said that chain link fencing isn't particularly visually appealing, although its appearance can be improved by painting it, using fence slats or by growing plants against it.
